When a factory grows and paper records are no longer enough to control what happens on the shop floor, production managers start hearing about MES. The term sounds like expensive, complex technology reserved for large automotive or pharmaceutical plants. What is an MES?

MES stands for Manufacturing Execution System. It is a software layer that sits between the factory floor — where physical production happens — and business management systems like the ERP. Its main function is to record, monitor and coordinate everything that happens during the manufacturing process in real time.

A typical MES records:

  • What is being produced at any given moment and in what quantity
  • Which raw materials or ingredients have been consumed and which batch they came from
  • Which machines or workstations are active and at what yield
  • Which operators were involved at each stage and when
  • Which quality controls were carried out and which failed
  • The complete history of each finished product batch

In short, the MES converts the factory floor into data — data that can be queried, audited and analysed.

The difference between an MES and an ERP

This is the most common source of confusion. An ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) manages company resources at the business level: purchase orders, invoices, warehouse stock, payroll, accounting. It works with consolidated information in relatively long time cycles. When the ERP notes that 500 kg of flour have been consumed, a day or even a week may have already passed.

The MES, on the other hand, works in real time on the production process. It knows right now that mixer number 3 is blending 47 kg of flour from batch FA-2026-07-31-002 with 8 kg of yeast from batch LV-45, that operator Juan García started the mix at 09:14, and that the weight recorded by the integrated scale matches the programmed formula.

Both systems are complementary, not competing. The MES feeds real data to the ERP. But for many industrial SMEs, the ERP already exists — what's missing is precisely that layer of control on the shop floor.

When does a small factory need an MES?

Not every company needs an MES from day one. There are clear signals that production has outgrown what paper or Excel can manage safely:

Signal 1: Batches are getting lost or confused

If you've ever had to manually trace where a product's ingredients came from because a customer complained — and that process took hours or even days — you already need digital traceability. An MES solves this problem at the root.

Signal 2: Production records are manual and unreliable

Paper sheets filled in by hand, sometimes at the end of a shift, sometimes from memory, are a constant source of errors. If your records don't accurately reflect what happened on the shop floor, you're manufacturing without visibility.

When a simpler solution is enough

Honesty is important here too. If your company produces few product references, in small volumes, with very linear processes and no specific regulatory pressure, a basic traceability system may be sufficient for now.
